Mission Moment

During a new patient's first medical appointment, the provider has the opportunity to review past medical history, but also to hear the patient's story. Recently a patient was seen who comes from a war torn country. She teared up talking about her children, the majority of whom are living in other countries, having fled by land and sea.  A victim of spousal abuse, she has never received treatment for an injury sustained when her spouse shoved her to the ground. She has also never had preventive gynecological treatment. Our provider told the patient she would send referrals for an evaluation of her injury, as well as a screening mammogram. The patient's eye got wide. "But, I cannot afford this", she protested. When the provider explained that there would be no charge, the patient once again teared up. She expressed her gratitude over and over again.
Like all of us, our patients are much more than their health needs. Hearing their stories, and treating them as whole people, brings hope and healing.
